Comfort and Consolation

The care you need

Are you getting the care you need?
—the time to sit by the window
watching the birds in the feeder;
—the quiet to read a little Leunig?

The care that puts a mug
of tea at your elbow,
refraining from anxious reasurance.
That allows silence
to nourish the air,
making routine a hallowed place.

This care frees you from decision,
If you're tired, you must rest.
Restless? Let's walk.

Lifted of all burdens, you
take your allotted place
at the sink—washing or drying
as requested.

Let the rain wet you,
Let the sun dry you,
Let quiet care enfold you.
Lay down your load,
your strength is not needed now.
Lie in the shade, it is siesta time.
The journey will wait.

No sentiment riffles the calm,
neither approval nor disapproval.
Quiet acceptance pervades
the fabric of the day.
