A man who is loved profoundly
Sits quietly;
Listens carefully;
Sips his beer with a thoughtful air;
Smiling at nothing as he
Jingles the change in his pocket.
A man who is loved profoundly
Gazes into space;
Feeds the cat twice;
Misses the phone ringing
And scratches his jaw,
Wondering when he shaved last.
A man who is loved profoundly
Sees that orange
Is not green;
A thought
Cannot be unthought;
And love makes morsels of us all.
This profoundly-loved man
Stands on the brink
Awed by preposterous fate,
Watching beer, cat, phone
And whiskers slide away
As he is overtaken by the improbable future.
